The crew of the scientific sea station “Deepstar Six” is funded by the Navy to perform scientific studies as well as install an underwater nuclear missile silo. While checking on the area they are assigned to create the silo they discovered an underwater cave possibly created through undersea magma possible millions of years old. Scarpelli wants to perform further studies into the sea cave because the local area has been filled with mysterious reports of undersea activity since the late 1800s. Scarpelli warns Dr. Gelder that they’re supposed to follow protocol if such geological discoveries are to be reported to the Navy however Dr. Gelder doesn’t wish to lose funding and continues the project by destroying the cave. After the crew creates an opening to the cave, they decide to explore it with an underwater sensor, but lost it while scanning. They decide to go after the sensor in the cave when they were attacked by a creature. Joyce Collins lost their signal and tells Synder to get help, but Synder takes his time getting Dr. Gelder. Meanwhile the mini-station that Joyce worked on was attacked again by the same creature and their station is in risk of sinking. Captain Laidlaw and McBride goes to rescue them, but nearly get attacked by the same creature if it wasn’t for the quick thinking of turning off their minisub lights and engines. Only McBride and Joyce made it out as the captain and fellow scientist was too injured to be rescued. Synder was then ordered to make a report and follow procedure according to computer instructions. Synder reported in the situation caused by an aggressor and the computer ordered the missiles be detonated for safety. Without realizing his error, by detonating the nuclear missiles the shock wave damages Deepstar Six station and the crew is forced to leave, but can’t because their bodies need to be adjusted for the correct pressure in the pressure chamber before leaving. The crew figures out a means to restore pressure to safely leave the station, but while sending a crew member to repair external damage he was attacked by the sea creature and the creature ate half of his body. Water gushed into the station through the water port and the creature swam right into the station. Scarpelli would be eaten next and the crew runs to higher ground to regroup. Synder was given a pressurized harpoon while the rest of the crew had shotguns. They had to complete specific repairs to the station to leave and so they re-entered the water filled station area armed and intentionally throw lights to distract the creature. It wasn’t long the creature attacked again and Dr. Gelder moved right in front of Synder and he accidentally kills Dr. Gelder as Synder was aiming for the creature. Synder runs back to higher ground along with the crew. Synder at this point has become mentally unstable as his anxiety has made him erratic. He freaked when he hallucinated Dr. Gelder returning for him. Dr. Norris gave him some drugs to calm his nerves, but it wasn’t enough and he ran to the emergency escape pod. Synder left Deepstar Six without having his body adjusted to surface pressure. Synder suffers an extreme case of “the bends” and throughout his head begins to bleed until his body “explode” from the pressure. Meanwhile Dr. Norris, McBride, and Joyce are stuck in the station and McBride risks swimming to the mini-sub to rescue them. While getting to the pod Joyce and Dr. Norris though McBride finished and opened the door, but it was the creature that knocked. The overflowing water allowed the creature to enter the room and attack them. The creature is revealed to be a huge reptilian/crustacean with lobster-like mouth and a with a reptilian tail. Dr. Norris distracted the creature and told Joyce to leave as Dr. Norris tried to take the creature with her. Dr. Norris died from attempting to shock the creature to death. Joyce and McBride would sleep in the adjacent room getting their bodies adjusted for surface pressure and leaves. As they reach the surface they thought it was safe until the creature attacks them. McBride distracts the creature while Joyce stays on their emergency raft. McBride ejects the mini-sub fuel and ignited the sub with flames around them. The sub explodes along with the creature. Joyce thought McBride died, but he survived and they row their way back to civilization.
